3/28 - Construction Update
After many people had split into separate projects, (e.g., designing boards, constructing furniture), it had been a while since I’d actually stopped by the shipping containers. Below are some photos I took of how things had progressed since I last visited. Shelves now hang from the walls of shipping container #2: Whitney Warner (left) and Rachel Shettle (right) are assembling the...

Furniture Fabrication
As part of repurposing the shipping containers for use as a classroom, some students went to task creating inexpensive and easily-fabricated furniture for the classroom’s interior. Pieces being designed include shelves, chairs, and tables. Below are some photos of the furniture during or shortly after fabrication.  The shelves: The tables: Hank Mezza (left) and Jordan Inman (right)...

The Boards
As work progress continued on the Urbarn project, professor Tim Gray wanted to showcase the project at the Jewish Community Center in Indianapolis, as well as in the College of Architecture & Planning building on Ball State’s campus. Arch 402 students Adam McGuire and Eunseam Lee therefore went to task designing boards for display, which were finished and printed on March 19th.  An...

3/12 - Hanging Door #2
The Arch 402 team reached another major milestone on Monday, March 12: the second (and last) sliding door was attached, so that both containers now have working sliding doors. Some photos of this milestone in action are below:

The Model
As many in the team worked to create renderings and construction drawings during Urbarn’s design stages, Arch 402 student Jordan Inman created a beautifully crafted model, which captured the feel of the project in three dimensions. Some photos of the model are below:

2/29 - Cutting the Container (Round 2)
Monday the 27th of February was undoubtedly one of our most productive days of work so far, indicated in part by the fact this is, by necessity, our longest blog post yet. Steel was cut, walls were painted, and sparks were flying as welders went to task. Be sure to check out the full set of photos by clicking “Read More” at the bottom of the post. Whitney Warner and Rachel Shettle...

Designing the Kid Zone Partition
Dave Smith took upon himself the task of designing the partition wall that will separate the “Kid Zone” from the rest of the shipping container. Initially designed in a program called Kangaroo, the final design will be digitally transferred to and fabricated by a mill in the College of Architecture & Planning Fabrication Lab.  Here are some screenshots of Dave’s work on...

Preparing the Door
One of our most exciting days of progress on site was when we prepared the door for use on the second shipping container. Work commenced in simultaneous tasks: while some students painted the door, other students prepared the track that the door would eventually slide on. Finally, all of the students came back together to lift the door into place. This post features some of the best photos to be...

Painting Container #1
As rain showered down upon the site, we decided that painting the ceiling of the first container was the most effective use of that day. Following are some photos of students applying the first coats of “Gusto Gold” to the first shipping container.  Click the link below for the rest of the photos: Whitney Warner and Rachel Shettle putting on the finishing touches:

2/6 - The First Cut
Our studio made some exciting progress on the shipping container on Monday, the 6th of February. After the first container was finished painting over the weekend, the team turned its attention to the second container. The most exciting change was the completion of the first large cut in the container. Spirits were high by the end of the day, as everybody admired the new opening from the...

Work Progress 2/3
After our first big push on the first of February, our team hit the ground running on Friday the second of February. While some began to experiment with cutting containers, others began putting a coat of primer on the first container for future painting.  Photos of the progress below: Click the link below for more photos of work progress: Any rust had to be sanded away before...

2/1 - Arrival of Container #1
The Wednesday, February 1 marked an exciting milestone for our project - the first of our two shipping containers arrived! Students made trips to Heath Farm throughout the day to visit our new workplace and get an idea of what the months ahead would bring. Taking full advantage of the beautiful spring-like weather, we wasted no time in getting a head start on preparing the shipping container for...

Design Scheme #6
As the previously separated teams reunified after creating separate schemes, students sought to create a single design that combined the best elements of the different proposals. The design below likely represents a scheme reasonably close to what will be the final result. Note the continued use of the chain water collection system, the central breezeway, and the large wooden deck emanating from...

Design Scheme #5
After the four initial design schemes were developed and presented, the students were divided into two new design groups. Each group was to separately assimilate the best features of the previous proposals and develop them into a single, finalized design. Below is the first of these such attempts, which focused specifically on creating an orthogonal layout:

Design Scheme #4
This proposal is the last of the four initial design strategies presented by the Arch 418 studio to the students of the Project School. Developed by Chris Baile, Adam McGuire, Hank Mezza, and Dave Smith, the design prominently features the use of a single interior space constructed between two separate shipping containers. When presented to the students of the Project School on January 20, the...

Design Scheme #3
This proposal for a shipping container design was created by Zach Grajewski, Jordan Inman, and Katie Werner, and was presented to the Project School students on January 20. The idea of an open, yet covered space between the two containers was a popular one, and would continue to be explored in subsequent designs. Click here for the complete presentation PDF.

"We Are What We Grow"
UrBarn is a collaborative design project which combines the visions of the Ball State University Arch 402 studio and the Indianapolis Project School. Tarrey Banks, school leader of the Project School, outlines his vision for the project below: We’ve all heard the saying, “We are what we eat.” Another idea that is just as true is, “We are what we grow.” With this in...

Design Scheme #2
This design scheme was developed by Mallory Barga, Rachel Shettle, and Whitney Warner for presentation at the Project School on January 20. The use of barn doors and other references to barns and vernacular architecture were particularly warmly received. Click here for the complete presentation PDF.

Project School Charrette
On January 20, 2012, the Arch 418 studio held its first charrette with the students of the Indianapolis Project School. During the visit, Project School students got hands-on with the design process as they created their own models and sketches, which they presented to the students of the Arch 418 studio. The talent demonstrated by the students of the Project School was remarkable. In turn, our...
